Avenue Magazine, Calgary, March 2006

There may be nothing finer than the discovery of a new favorite food – those gems on restaurant menus, at deli counters, market stalls or bakeries that surprise, delight and lure us across town, through any kind of weather or traffic, for just another bite.

As this list of 25 great things to eat in the city comes around for the third year, the discoveries from previous years still constantly call my name. But there are new addictions around every corner. So, here is this year’s collection of Calgary’s best (or at least great) things to eat, in no particular order, from your devoted food sleuth.

Highwood Crossing Sunflower flaxseed granola
Penny and Tony Marshall offer yet another great way to get your grains. Their Highwood Crossing granola is loaded with organic flakes of rolled oats, flax, and toasted sunflower seeds, then sweetened ever so slightly with good ol’ Canadian maple syrup. It’s a homestyle recipe that’s better than any other cereal on the shelf – real regional Alberta food and the kind of high-fibre, whole carbs your body craves.
